Opossum Parklands – Ash Barty’s legacy for future generations

At TLCC, we take pride in delivering exceptional landscape construction projects that enrich communities and foster meaningful connections with nature. Our latest achievement, the transformation of Opossum Parklands, stands as a testament to this commitment. In collaboration with the Queensland Government and Ipswich City Council, we’ve created a space designed to inspire generations to come.

A champion’s vision

Former tennis champion Ash Barty partnered with our team, alongside local government bodies, to design a park that encourages children to be active and engaged in outdoor play. As a passionate advocate for sport and community wellbeing, Ash played a major role in bringing this vision to life.

“Encouraging children to be active and play is a passion of mine, and I can’t wait for local families, including my own, to visit this beautiful new space.”

The Ash Barty Playground

The centrepiece of the Opossum Parklands is the Ash Barty Playground – designed to reflect her inspirational sporting journey. Featuring a half tennis court and rebound wall, it provides a space for children to develop new skills – a cricket and soccer wall sit on the reverse side, offering a multi-sport experience for young athletes.

When viewed from above, the park’s winding footpaths form the shape of a tennis ball, in a striking homage to Ash’s career. Complementing the playground is a dry creek bed, nature play areas, shaded seating and extensive gardens – ensuring a diverse range of activities for children and families to enjoy.

Project scope and construction

TLCC’s work on Opossum Parklands included the construction of a new playground, formalised pedestrian access, a new shelter and additional seating and tables, as well as major landscaping improvements. Key elements of the project included:

  • Retention of existing playground, shelters, trees and pathways
  • Creation of the Ash Barty playground
  • Nature-play equipment integrated into the landscape
  • New connecting pathways
  • Additional tree planting and landscaping enhancements
  • Installation of a commemorative plaque.

A lasting gift to the community

Ash Barty has always maintained a deep connection to her hometown of Springfield in South East Queensland. With her contributions to Opossum Parklands, she leaves a legacy that extends beyond her sporting achievements.

Opossum Parklands is set to become a cherished space where children can play, learn and be inspired. TLCC is proud to have played a role in bringing this vision to life, reinforcing our dedication to creating outdoor environments that serve and strengthen communities.
